Dental Emergencies Come in Many Forms
Knocked-Out Teeth
The most common reason someone needs to visit an emergency dental care center is when a tooth is broken by an accident or injury. When a tooth is broken from its root, it could become infected and cause problems in other parts of your mouth if it is not treated right away.
If an accident or injury ever knocks one of your permanent teeth out of its socket:
- Rinse the tooth and gently try to put it back in your mouth.
- If you can’t put the tooth back in its socket, keep the tooth in your cheek or place it in a container of milk to keep it moist.
- Don’t brush the tooth or try to scrub it clean.
- Make sure you hold it only by its crown or top to avoid touching its root.
- The sooner you can get emergency dental care, the better the chances of saving the permanent tooth.
Cracked, Broken, or Chipped Teeth
If one or more of your teeth ever become cracked or chipped, you should rinse your mouth with warm water to clean around the affected tooth. You can reduce the pain and swelling by placing a cold compress outside of your cheek near the damaged tooth.
Whenever possible, gently rinse and save the pieces of the chipped or broken tooth. Just like with a knocked-out tooth, the sooner you can get emergency dental care, the better chance you have of putting it back together and saving the tooth.
Bitten Tongue or Cheek
If an injury or accident causes you to bite your tongue, lip, or cheek, you can reduce the pain and swelling by gently cleaning the affected area with water and putting a cold compress on your cheek in 20-minute cycles to not damage your skin from the cold.
Severe Toothache
A toothache can turn into a dental emergency if it lasts longer than a few days and gets worse over time. You should get immediate dental care if inflammation or swelling shows up in your gums around the tooth, if it causes pain in your jaw, ears, or cheek, or if you have a fever. This can be a symptom of an impacted wisdom tooth that your dentist might have to remove by surgery.
You can treat a toothache by rinsing out your mouth with warm salt water to clean it and reduce the pain. You can also gently floss the tooth to remove food caught between it and other nearby teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can help, but avoid aspirin because it can burn your gum or other soft mouth tissues.
Missing Filling or Crown.
If a filling or crown falls out of a tooth, you should put it in a safe place and contact our office as soon as possible so we can take a look at the damage and repair or replace it.
There is a good possibility that you might feel sensitivity or pain in the tooth. You can reduce this by applying a mixture of clove oil and dental cement, though you should always consult our office for approval from the dentist for your particular situation.
Pain or Swelling in the Gums
Sometimes, younger patients may develop a swelling or inflammation in their gums by a tooth that is partially sticking out called “eruption.” This happens more often in your lower teeth around the wisdom teeth.
The softer gums can become easily inflamed when food gets caught in them that is hard to remove. The dark, moist gums are the perfect place for bacteria to grow and can lead to pain during biting, pus from the inflamed area, and often a bad taste or smell in your mouth.
Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water after removing the food particles can help reduce pain along with over-the-counter pain medications. You should avoid hot compresses that can cause more swelling or a fever. Come to the office as soon as possible for treatment.
Root Canal Infection
Pulpitis can affect an injured, cracked, or decayed tooth when its pulp becomes inflamed or infected with bacteria. Your tooth might become sensitive to hot, cold, or very sweet foods. In very bad cases, you may also have a fever, swollen lymph nodes, bad breath, or a bad taste in your mouth.
This very painful dental problem needs immediate treatment with a root canal treatment where the entire root of the tooth is cleaned out, filled with another material, and sealed.
Dental Abscess
An abscessed tooth can cause a fast and serious infection. If you ever feel and see any swelling in your gums, even if it doesn’t hurt, you should visit our office as soon as possible. The main goal then is to stop the spread of infection throughout your mouth and your dentist may prescribe antibiotics to help with this.
Your dentist will need to open the abscess so the pus can drain out. This will relieve the pressure on your affected tooth and gums and help get rid of the pain, swelling, and inflammation.
Had a chipped tooth. Dr. Timpson looked at it and fixed it then while I was in the chair. No pain. Explained each step as he proceeded forward. In and out in 30 minutes. Great staff. Always on time for me. Best in Henderson!

Dental Emergency FAQs
What is considered a dental emergency?
A good rule of thumb whether something is a dental emergency is if the problem is not getting better on its own or the pain cannot be managed with regular pain relievers.
A toothache that doesn’t have any swelling, bleeding, or extra redness in your gums or pain that can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers is usually not considered to be a dental emergency and probably isn’t worth the extra cost of an emergency dentist visit.
A cracked or chipped tooth that doesn’t cause pain, sores in your mouth, or bleeding gums may not be considered an immediate emergency, but these problems should still be treated in good time because those things could lead to further damage that we want to help you avoid.
What can I do about my emergency before I can get to the dentist?
We know how unsettling it can be when you are waiting for emergency dental care, and we want to give you a few home dental care treatments you can try before your emergency appointment.
These suggestions can help reduce your pain, make you more comfortable, and reduce the chance of any further damage:
- Rinse your mouth with warm salt water for sore teeth, gums, or tongue.
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Try a dental anesthetic with benzocaine to reduce pain in your mouth.
- Apply an ice pack outside of your cheeks in 20-minute cycles reduces swelling and bleeding.
- Stay away from drinks that are too hot or cold for painful and sensitive teeth.
- Gently apply a heating pad for severe jaw pain.
- Carefully eat soft foods and avoid chewing in the affected area in your mouth.
- Press a cloth gently on your mouth to reduce bleeding and inflammation.
- Place cotton over your broken tooth’s sharp edges to protect your gums and tongue.
When should I go straight to the ER?
There are some injuries to your face that may need a visit to your local emergency room rather than waiting for an emergency dental appointment.
A broken or injured jaw or other facial bone needs immediate treatment, especially if you are having difficulty breathing. X-rays will be needed to determine the extent of your injury and what treatment options both your doctor and dentist will want to start. You can reduce the pain and control the swelling of a broken jaw or other facial bone with a cold compress.
What is the best painkiller for a really bad toothache?
Over-the-counter pain medications like acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be used to manage the pain of a severe toothache or other mouth injury. But you need to be careful taking aspirin because it can inflame sensitive tissues in your mouth like your gums and tongue.
How can I sleep with a toothache?
A severe toothache can certainly keep you up at night. You can help manage the pain by rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and taking some OTC pain relievers. Gently brush around the tooth and floss to remove unwanted food particles that may be aggravating the toothache. Be careful not to force the floss if something is stuck between your teeth.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
